Les Misérables, a complete cinematic adaptation of the musical masterpiece, is set to premiere nationwide on December 21st (Friday) at TOHO CINEMAS NIKAGE and other theaters.

Hugh Jackman Delivers a Powerful Performance
Based on the novel by literary giant Victor Hugo, Les Misérables stands as the pinnacle of musicals, continuously breaking long-run records since its premiere in 1985. True to its title, 'The Miserable Ones,' the stage production has captivated audiences worldwide with its portrayal of 'true love' that perseveres through the struggles of its characters. Now, the excitement and emotion of this beloved musical have been brought to the screen on a grand scale, complete with its iconic songs.
The cast is nothing short of spectacular. Hugh Jackman, a film star and Tony Award-winning musical performer, takes on the role of the protagonist, Jean Valjean. His nemesis, Javert, is portrayed by Oscar winner Russell Crowe, while Cosette is played by Amanda Seyfried. Anne Hathaway embodies Fantine, Cosette's mother, delivering a powerful rendition of the renowned song 'I Dreamed a Dream'.
The film is directed by the acclaimed Tom Hooper, winner of the Academy Award for Best Director for 'The King's Speech.' The production also boasts Cameron Mackintosh, the originator of the stage version and producer of 'The Phantom of the Opera.'
Depicting the Lives of Those Striving to Live Today with Realism
Jean Valjean, imprisoned for 19 years for stealing bread, is paroled but, finding himself unable to settle into society, resorts to theft again. However, after encountering the kindness of the bishop who spares him, he resolves to be reborn, body and soul.
Having achieved success as a factory owner, he aids Fantine, who once worked at his factory and was forced into prostitution after being dismissed. He is entrusted with her young daughter, Cosette. Yet, Valjean is relentlessly pursued by the police officer Javert.
Valjean and Cosette flee to Paris, evading Javert's pursuit. Valjean pours his boundless love into Cosette, raising her into a beautiful young woman. Meanwhile, a student uprising ignites in the working-class districts of Paris, drawing everyone into the turbulent currents of revolution.—.
Valjean's life is a tumultuous journey as he seeks the righteous path. Centered on his inner journey, the drama, where the fates of various characters intertwine, realistically portrays the lives of people striving to live today, believing in a better tomorrow even amidst despair.
