MOVIE | A Woman's True Identity Unveiled After a Life Lived as a Man

Albert Nobbs: Glenn Close's Life's Work

Albert Nobbs, a film in which the great actress Glenn Close portrays a woman forced to live in solitude as a man to survive a difficult life, will be released in theaters on Friday, January 18, 2013, at TOHO CINEMAS CHANTER and other venues.

Text by YANAKA Tomomi

Directed by Rodrigo García, Who Previously Collaborated with Close on "Mother"

It was 1982 when Glenn Close first took on the lead role in the stage production of Albert Nobbs Off-Broadway. She won an Obie Award for her performance. Since then, she has harbored a resolve: "I must play this role on the big screen before I die." Albert Nobbs is the film adaptation she brought to fruition as producer, co-writer, and star.

Rodrigo García, who previously worked with Close on "Nine Lives" and "Mother," directed the film. The supporting cast, as per Close's wishes as producer, is comprised entirely of talented actors. The role of the "large" painter Hubert is played by veteran stage actress Janet McTeer, chosen for her imposing 186cm (6'1") stature. The part of the lovely hotel maid is charmingly portrayed by Mia Wasikowska, memorable for her role as Alice in "Alice in Wonderland."

Dreams, Friendship, First Love... Albert Opens the Door to Hope After a Life of Deception

In 19th-century Ireland, ravaged by economic depression and famine, Albert (Glenn Close), a waiter, has lived in hiding as a man to survive alone.

One day, Hubert (Janet McTeer), a handsome painter, arrives at the hotel where Albert works. Influenced by Hubert's authentic way of living, Albert begins to break free from a life of pretense and solitude, and starts to engage with others. He pursues his "dream" of owning his own shop with his hard-earned savings, seeks a "friend" he can truly cherish, searches for a life partner, and experiences his "first love.".

Witness the hope that unfolds as Albert, who lived in solitude as a man to endure a life of hardship and lost her true identity as a woman, opens the door to a new future.
