Interviews with Actors and Directors Who Have Enriched Woody Allen's Films
Woody Allen began his career as a comedy writer in his teens and gained fame as a stand-up comedian. In the 1960s, he embarked on a brilliant career, releasing more than one new film annually for over 40 years. Now, the first-ever documentary officially sanctioned by Allen himself has been completed.
Despite his overflowing talent and consistent output of masterpieces, Allen is also known for his staunch refusal of private interviews and filming. For this documentary, Emmy Award-winning director Robert B. Weide spent a year and a half filming Allen, drawing out numerous memorable quotes to create an unprecedented biographical film.
Furthermore, Director Weide conducted interviews with the stars who have graced Allen's films, including Penélope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, and Sean Penn, as well as collaborators like director Martin Scorsese. Incorporating valuable archival footage—showing Allen boxing with a kangaroo and presenting material on a TV show—the film chronicles his debut in show business, his writing and directing styles, his relationships with actors, and his inexhaustible creative drive.
The film goes beyond Allen's career to reveal his private world, including his childhood home and alma mater in Brooklyn, a personal message from his mother to him that Allen himself filmed, the typewriter he's used since he was sixteen, and notes filled with film ideas he's saved in his drawers. By venturing into his private sphere, the documentary unravels the man himself, culminating in an unprecedented work that successfully reflects the philosophy and worldview of this enigmatic filmmaker.
This documentary, filled with the films, love, and life of Woody Allen—who continues to create masterpieces with undiminished passion, as seen in recent works like "Midnight in Paris" and "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger," opening December 1st at TOHO Cinemas Chante, Shinjuku Musashinokan, and other theaters nationwide—offers a glimpse into the man who has graced film history and the background that fuels his creativity. We encourage you to witness it.
