Bridget Jones, the Endearingly Relatable Heroine, is Back!
She's back! The endearingly relatable heroine who swept women everywhere into a whirlwind of laughter and empathy, Bridget Jones, has returned!
Bridget, a 32-year-old single woman working at a London publishing house, is the protagonist of Helen Fielding's bestselling novel "Bridget Jones's Diary." Adapted into a film starring Renée Zellweger, she first appeared on screen in 2001.
She enjoys her drinks, can't quit smoking, and her weight is always a little over. She relies on tummy-control underwear, is incredibly clumsy, but is also quick to forgive herself and bounce back. While passionate about love, she also values her career—a woman on the edge, honestly chronicling her true feelings in her diary with self-deprecating humor. She's an utterly lovable character.
Her struggles with romance between two men—the staid lawyer Mark (Colin Firth) and her flirtatious boss Daniel (Hugh Grant)—as she desperately seeks "happiness!" resonated with women everywhere, leading to a massive hit! Four years later, in 2005, the sequel "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" was released, and it was another huge success.
Bridget returns to the screen in this installment at the age of 43. For some reason, she's still single. As for the two men she loved, Daniel tragically died in a plane crash, and Mark has married someone else. However, Bridget, now a successful TV producer, finds herself experiencing dramatic new encounters (a new love interest!).
It's Jack (Patrick Dempsey), the handsome, wealthy, and kind CEO of an IT company. Her usual clumsiness leads to a rapid connection with him, while Bridget also reunites with Mark. Mark, it turns out, is in divorce proceedings with his wife. Bridget finds herself torn between the two men once again.
Of course, Renée Zellweger reprises her role as Bridget. She earned her first Academy Award® nomination for the first film in the series and received numerous accolades, including nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and British Academy Film Awards. Her performance in the sequel also garnered a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical, cementing her explosive popularity as Bridget.
If you initially thought, "Wait, Bridget looks slimmer and prettier? This isn't Bridget. It's not funny," don't worry. Even in her slimmer form, her clumsiness remains intact. Watching her lie to herself while celebrating alone with cake, only to end up enjoying a solo stage, or her sharp questioning during a live TV broadcast, is guaranteed to have you roaring with laughter.
And for those saddened by the absence of the dashing Hugh Grant, rest assured. His void is filled by Patrick Dempsey, known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd in the hit ABC series "Grey's Anatomy" (2005-), who plays Jack. Moreover, Jack is not cold or selfish; he's utterly faultless... Danger, ex-boyfriend Mark.
Mark, on the other hand, is married and seems pathetic, constantly having his pride shattered by being two-timed. However, Colin Firth, looking incredibly handsome with the physique he honed for "Kingsman," is so captivating to watch. Bridget, facing even more challenging situations as a woman in her 40s, what will she do!? Which man will she choose, or will she...Kingsman"Kingsman," is undeniably dashing. What will Bridget, facing even more challenging situations as a woman in her 40s, do!? Which man will she choose, or will she...—.
The supporting cast is also excellent. Particularly memorable is her colleague Miranda (Sarah Solemani), who would undoubtedly make workdays enjoyable. There are also surprises throughout, such as Ed Sheeran, currently on hiatus from his music career, being mistaken by Bridget for a Starbucks barista. Familiar faces from the series, including Bridget's parents, Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones, also make appearances, resulting in what is arguably the funniest film in the series.
Whether you're tired from work and romance or not, watching this movie is sure to leave you feeling refreshed. You'll laugh heartily, shed a tear, and even if you can't empathize with Bridget, you'll undoubtedly gain the energy to face tomorrow. "Bridget Jones's Baby" opens on Saturday, October 29th.
