Created Solely by Those Who Love the "Tower of the Sun"

The "Tower of the Sun" is a structure created by artist Taro Okamoto, built as the symbol of the theme pavilion for the Japan World Exposition (Expo '70 Osaka), held for 183 days from March 14, 1970. This colossal 70-meter structure, which pierces the great roof and is said to be modeled after Okamoto's pet crow, remained after the expo concluded. Even now, nearly half a century later, it commands a powerful presence in the Expo '70 Commemorative Park.

The tower features three faces: the golden face at the top representing the future, the sun face on the front torso representing the present, and the black sun depicted on the back representing the past. An underground space also exists, which housed a fourth face called the "Sun of Antiquity." This face went missing after 1993, and although its restoration was planned for 2014 with a target release in 2016, the schedule was just postponed by one year this past February.

Prompted by the plan to open the tower's interior to the public, an idea emerged to create a documentary film that would re-examine and present to the world the message Taro Okamoto embedded within the "Tower of the Sun" nearly half a century after the Expo. The director for this film is to be chosen through an open call.

The "Tower of the Sun," a mysterious tower that symbolizes Japan's economic boom and reminds those who lived through that era of "those days." Anyone is welcome to apply, regardless of age, nationality, or gender, provided they possess a love for this extraordinary monument and experience and skill in filmmaking.
