"Steve Jobs": Behind the Scenes Just Before the Legendary Presentation | MOVIE
MOVIE | Not a Birth Story, Not a Biography
Behind the Scenes of That Legendary Presentation, Brought to Life by a Master Director and Screenwriter
Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple and the man who redefined digital technology, is the subject of the film "Steve Jobs," which opened nationwide on Friday, February 12th, offering a glimpse into his private life.
By Yosuke Nakamura
The Secrets Behind His Captivating Ideas and His Little-Known Side as a Father
This film is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Walter Isaacson, which drew on approximately three years of interviews with Jobs himself, his family, and associates. The book sold over one million copies in Japan across its two volumes.
The narrative skillfully captures the 40 minutes leading up to three pivotal presentations in Jobs' life: the Macintosh in 1984, a tumultuous period; the NeXT Cube in 1988, created after his ousting from Apple; and the iMac in 1998, launched upon his return to Apple. It distinguishes itself from typical biopics by not merely celebrating Jobs' genius in bringing iPods and iPhones to the world. Furthermore, a key highlight is its exploration of Jobs' lesser-known role as a father, delving into his complex relationship with his daughter, Lisa, marked by estrangement and reconciliation.
The film is directed by Danny Boyle, known for "Slumdog Millionaire." The screenplay is by Aaron Sorkin, the acclaimed writer behind "The Social Network." Michael Fassbender, nominated for an Academy Award for "12 Years a Slave," portrays Steve Jobs. Fassbender's performance, capturing both Jobs' latent charisma and his profound paternal awkwardness, earned him praise from director Boyle as "a terrifying actor."
The supporting cast includes Kate Winslet as Joanna Hoffman, the marketing manager for the early Macintosh; Seth Rogen as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; and Jeff Daniels as John Sculley, the CEO who ousted Jobs from Apple.
The film has garnered significant acclaim, winning Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards. Kate Winslet also received the Best Supporting Actress award at the 69th British Academy Film Awards. Additionally, the film earned nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress at the 88th Academy Awards.
