MOVIE | "Cinema Grand Prize 2012" Decided by Cinema Staff Nationwide
The "Cinema Award 2012": Voted by Cinema Staff Nationwide for the Most Brilliant Films of 2011
The "Cinema Award 2012" Has Been Decided!
The "Cinema Award," Japan's first film prize, is chosen by the staff of independent cinemas nationwide who deliver films to audiences 365 days a year. From the films released in 2011, without distinction between foreign and domestic, major or independent, works that filmmakers purely "want audiences to see on the big screen" were selected with passion and dedication.
Text by KAJII Makoto (OPENERS)
This is the 4th year. What is the best of the best chosen by these film sommeliers?
In the special category "A Person's Pick," where prominent figures from various fields name their most memorable film of 2011, director Lee Sang-il selected Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan." He commented, "The director's inhumanity is superb. Natalie Portman's ecstasy, pushed to physical and mental extremes, is agonizing. His sense and skill in visually depicting her moment of suffering, enduring it all, and finally succumbing to pleasure are breathtaking. The thorough sadism of director Darren Aronofsky is likely what enabled him to achieve such a difficult visual representation of 'madness.' I want to learn from it."
"Black Swan" was overwhelmingly voted number one, based on ballots from 128 independent cinemas nationwide (a collective term for privately owned, NPO, or community-based cinemas such as mini-theaters, neighborhood cinemas, and regional multiplexes) for films released between December 2010 and the end of November 2011.
