In the early 1970s, Japan was caught in a complex of inferiority towards the West. Amidst this, there was a woman who single-handedly challenged the world, wielding her "Japanese-ness" as her weapon. It was Sayoko Yamaguchi, who caused a sensation with her black hair, almond-shaped eyes, and mysterious, alluring appearance.
Adored by top fashion designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Kansai Yamamoto, and a source of immense inspiration for leading creators like Serge Lutens and Koji Yokosuka, her true self remained enigmatic.
In this film, director Takako Matsumoto, who was friends with Sayoko Yamaguchi during her lifetime, embarks on a journey to find "Sayoko Yamaguchi" by gathering testimonies from those who knew her and examining precious footage left behind.
What was the untold personal side of this woman who held her own with global stars like Mick Jagger and Steely Dan, and who was uncompromising as an artist? Eight years after her passing, this film approaches the true image of Sayoko Yamaguchi, which has never been revealed until now.
