The True "Shame" a Man Drowning in Sex Tries to Hide

SHAME

Only Sex is Depicted (!)

The phrase "problematic work," often used in promotional taglines, perfectly applies to this film. Although rated R-18, we would advise even underage readers of this article to refrain from reading it. The story centers on a man addicted to sex in New York. Due to its explicit content, the film faced unprecedentedly strict screening regulations in various countries, and in Japan, its R-18 rating itself was in jeopardy.

Brandon, a suave single man played by Michael Fassbender, excels at his job while dedicating almost all his private time to sex. He never reveals his inner thoughts, spending his days with casual partners or sex workers. His sexual life is depicted with a detached yet intense realism. His life takes a sudden turn when his sister, played by Carey Mulligan, unexpectedly moves in. Why does he indulge in sex? What happened in his past?──What is the true shame he hides?

The director is Steve McQueen. With a background as a sculptor and photographer, and having won the prestigious Turner Prize for his short film, he is perceived more as an artist than a film director. His work on this film has earned widespread acclaim not only from the film industry but also from the art world, with US media already hailing it as a top contender for this year's Academy Awards.

Through its explicit sex scenes, the film portrays the story of a lonely man. Despite its provocative nature, the artistic cinematography and the revelation of his sorrow at the conclusion are bound to move you deeply.
