Twin Brothers Cast as the Protagonist
Uri Orlev, a Jewish author who himself was interned in a concentration camp, penned 'Run, Boy, Run,' recounting the experiences of Joram Friedman. This memoir has been adapted into a film by renowned German director Pepe Danquart, who previously won an Academy Award® for Best Live Action Short Film for 'Schwarzfahrer' (The Black Rider).
Danquart's film depicts the astonishing true story of an 8-year-old Jewish boy during World War II who, by concealing his identity and name, escaped the clutches of Nazi Germany by posing as a Polish orphan, surviving alone for three years until the end of the war. Twin brothers Andrzej and Kamil Tkacz were cast as the protagonist. By utilizing the brothers' individual strengths, with Kamil handling the more delicate scenes and Andrzej the more active ones, the film expresses a wide range of emotions.
Coincidentally, in 2015, the 70th anniversary of the end of the war and the liberation of Auschwitz, a moving film that appeals to the hearts of all viewers, from adults to children, has been created.
'Jurek,' the Polish Orphan
Surlik, an 8-year-old boy, escapes from the Jewish ghetto in Poland and flees into the forest. Exhausted from hunger and cold, he collapses and is found by Mrs. Jancik. Noticing Surlik's intelligence and charm, she gives him a fictional identity as 'Jurek,' a Polish orphan, to help him survive on his own and escape his pursuers.
'Jurek' travels from farm to farm, seeking shelter and food, reciting the fabricated story he was taught. Some offer him kindness, others shut their doors, and some try to exploit him. Though he finds temporary peace with a kind family, he must constantly flee to the next place whenever his Jewish identity is threatened. Why must he endure such hardship simply for being Jewish? Yet, holding onto the promise he made to his father, with whom he was separated, 'Jurek's' journey of survival continues.
