Director Chang Rong-ji's Second Feature Film
From Taiwan, a country that has delivered numerous acclaimed youth films, comes a new style of school mystery, 'Partners.' The film is directed by Chang Rong-ji, whose second feature film this is. Shifting from his debut work 'Touch of Light' (2012), which moved audiences with its depiction of a visually impaired pianist, he now uses the school mystery genre to explore the loneliness, pain, despair, and hope of contemporary youth.
The main cast consists of six young actors. Only Wu Chien-ho, who plays the protagonist Huang and is active in Taiwanese dramas and films, and Wen Chen-lin, who plays the student Chu, have prior substantial acting experience. However, all of them convincingly lead the narrative with their solid acting skills. Also noteworthy is the theme song, a Chinese rendition of flumpool's hit song 'Tsuyoku Hakanaku' by the popular Taiwanese band.
What Truth Will Huang, Yeh, and Lin Uncover?
On their way to school, Huang, Yeh, and Lin, three male high school students, stumble upon the mysteriously deceased body of a female student, Sha, from their own school in a back alley. Though they had never spoken to her before, this strange encounter deepens their connection.
The three become intrigued by the cause of Sha's death: was it suicide? As they begin to investigate the truth, suspicion arises that she may have been bullied by her classmates.
The story, which might seem to be heading towards revenge after the boys' search for a culprit, takes an unexpected turn and accelerates. What truth do these young people, grappling with anxieties common in Japan such as bullying, social media, misunderstandings, and retaliation, ultimately arrive at?
