Director Miwa Nishikawa's Highly Anticipated Latest Work, Following Her Acclaimed 'The Light Shines Only There'

Director Miwa Nishikawa, who achieved great success with 'The Light Shines Only There,' including winning the Best Director award at the Montreal World Film Festival. Her long-awaited latest film selects three stories from Hatsue Nakawaki's omnibus novel 'You Are a Good Child,' which consists of five stories, and depicts issues facing contemporary society such as child abuse and classroom breakdown.

The lead role is played by Kengo Kora, one of the most talked-about actors today. He delivers a passionate performance as a new, earnest but indecisive elementary school teacher. And in 'Like Father, Like Son', Machiko Ono, who gave a superb performance as a mother whose child was switched at birth, portrays a different kind of mother, one who carries emotional scars. Also appearing are Chizuru Ikewaki and Kazuya Takahashi, whose performances in 'The Light Shines Only There' were highly praised.

The 'Encounters' and 'Realizations' of Three People Living with Their Own Struggles

Okada is a new elementary school teacher in charge of a fourth-grade class. His earnest but indecisive nature proves to be a disadvantage, and the children do not listen to him.

Meanwhile, Masami lives alone with her three-year-old daughter, Ayane, as her husband is on a solo assignment overseas. Behind the smiles she shows to other mothers, she sometimes hits Ayane.

Akiko, on the other hand, is an elderly woman living alone in a house on a hill leading to the elementary school. She is anxious that her dementia may be starting, after leaving a supermarket without paying.

Three people, each living with their own problems in one town. However, through unexpected 'encounters' and 'realizations,' each takes a new step forward.

'Abuse, dementia, autism, classroom breakdown, neglect, monster parents... In words, this is a story about people grappling with such issues. Rather than calling them grand social problems, they are things we all face,' says director Nishikawa, whose work sincerely depicts 'what it means for people to love each other.'
