D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT
Exhibition: '47winetourism - A Journey to Savor the Nature, People, and Culture of Japan's 47 Prefectures'
The d47 MUSEUM, a museum themed around Japan's 47 prefectures, is holding the exhibition '47winetourism - A Journey to Savor the Nature, People, and Culture of Japan's 47 Prefectures' until Sunday, May 8, 2022. This exhibition supports wineries across Japan that preserve regional traditions and create landscapes and culture through winemaking.
The Landscape of a Region Revealed Through Its Diverse Wines
D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT, which focuses on long-life design by discovering and showcasing 'timeless, regional designs,' opened 'd47 MUSEUM' at Shibuya Hikarie in 2012 to convey the charm of Japan's 47 prefectures. Together with the adjacent 'd47 design travel store' and 'd47食堂' (d47 Dining Hall), it presents Japan in an interconnected way.
This is the 29th exhibition at d47 MUSEUM, '47winetourism - A Journey to Savor the Nature, People, and Culture of Japan's 47 Prefectures.' For this exhibition, in collaboration with Takayuki Oki of the Japan Wine Tourism Association, who has been organizing and advocating for wine tourism since 2008, d47 MUSEUM will showcase wineries from each of the 47 prefectures, selected not only for their wines but also from the perspective of winemaking, focusing on keywords such as industry, lifestyle, environment, community, and region.
Wine, made by fermenting fruit without water, is a local sake that allows one to savor the land itself. In the past decade, Japanese wine consumption has increased 1.5-fold, the number of Japanese wineries is on the rise, and shipments are growing. Japanese wine has become a familiar drink in our daily lives.
The exhibition introduces the winemaking practices of wineries from across Japan. For example, 'Tokyo Winery' is a winery where the owner handles almost everything, from brewing to sales, utilizing the unique characteristics of high-quality grapes grown in Tokyo and other regions of Japan. The exhibition also features wineries such as 'Takeda Winery' in Yamagata Prefecture, which has spent about 20 years improving its soil and growing grapes using natural farming methods, selected by Mr. Oki and D&DEPARTMENT.
During the exhibition period, visitors can purchase wines and related products from the participating wineries. Talk events with guest producers are also planned. This exhibition allows visitors to see, hear, taste, and experience the diverse world of wine and the unique landscapes of the regions they come from.
