EAT | A Sweet Collaboration Between Milanese Gelateria and Tanaka Ya Senbei Sou Honke

Special Menu for "Gelateria Marghera" First Anniversary in Japan Released for a Limited Time

Gelateria Marghera, a gelateria originating in Milan, is celebrating the first anniversary of its first overseas store in Azabu Juban. To commemorate this milestone, they have collaborated with Tanaka Ya Senbei Sou Honke, a venerable establishment with over 150 years of history, to create a limited-edition menu item called "Biscotti M×T," available from July 14th (Monday). Special flavors and new menu items will also be introduced.

Gelateria Marghera was born in Milan, Italy, in 1979, by gelato artisan Franco Prampolini. True to its name, which means "handmade" and "artisanal," the gelato, made with seasonal ingredients and traditional methods, quickly captivated Milanese locals. It became so popular that it attracted over 3,000 visitors daily, with weekend crowds even causing "traffic jams."

Last year, on July 14th, the Azabu Juban store opened as the brand's first location outside of Italy. Equipped with the same gelato machines as the Milan flagship store, it offers 63 varieties of flavors, including Japanese exclusives like matcha, adzuki bean, and almond jelly, prepared fresh each morning according to the season.

To celebrate this significant first anniversary, Gelateria Marghera has partnered with Tanaka Ya Senbei Sou Honke from Ogaki, Gifu. This esteemed establishment has preserved its hand-baking techniques for over 150 years since its founding in Ansei 6. For this collaboration, Tanaka Ya Senbei Sou Honke has crafted four types of hand-baked senbei, highlighting the flavors of yuzu from Kochi Prefecture, sansho pepper from Okuhida, mint, and coffee. These senbei are paired with flavors selected by owner Franco himself, including the Japan-debut "Chocolate Orange." Each senbei is imprinted with a special mark featuring the logos of both brands as a symbol of this unique collaboration.

Additionally, for the first anniversary, a special flavor has been created using apple mangoes harvested from Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture, with only 6,000 pieces available annually. These apple mangoes, ripened through natural farming methods and allowed to fall from the branches naturally, offer a concentrated sweetness and a smooth texture.

Furthermore, the Azabu Juban store will introduce "Frappé," a popular item from the Milan flagship, as a new summer-only menu item. Customers can choose two gelato flavors from the display case, which are then blended with a custom base and milk right before their eyes, creating a refreshing frozen drink perfect for summer.

Gelateria Marghera, which also opened an Atre Ebisu store last November, enjoys strong support from many fans in Japan. The anniversary menu, specially developed for Japan, is a unique creation that fuses Marghera's philosophy with Japanese tradition and craftsmanship, a delicacy not even available in Italy.
