'Cuberdon': Born by Chance, Evolved into an Adult Confection
Affectionately known in its native tongue as 'nose' due to its shape, 'Cuberdon' is a traditional confection born in Belgium in the 19th century, a country renowned for its chocolate, waffles, and beer. It's a type of confectionery with a firm exterior and a gooey syrup filling inside, offering a gummy-like texture.
Its origins trace back to 1873. Legend has it that a pharmacist in Ghent accidentally left syrup-filled throat lozenges in a box of cornflour. They were discovered solidified into small, cone-shaped candies, marking the beginning of Cuberdon. This serendipitous creation, due to its exquisite taste, became widely popular throughout Belgium and is now one of the favorite sweets of Belgians.
'Belgian Cuberdon,' making its first appearance in Japan, is a shop that has revived the traditional 'Cuberdon' with a touch of color, presenting it as an adult confection cherished by European celebrities. Made with carefully selected ingredients and meticulously handcrafted using traditional, secret methods, it is now produced by only a handful of artisans in Belgium.
At the limited-time pop-up store in Ginza Mitsukoshi, a wide array of visually appealing, colorful flavors such as strawberry, orange, and melon are available. Enjoy them as they are, chilled with champagne, frozen and paired with vodka, or added to tea or coffee. Each offers a luxurious taste with a burst of fruity aroma that fills the mouth.
