Kanji Characters Related to Sake──Characters like 酌 (shaku - to pour), 酔 (sui - drunk), 酩 (mei - drunk), 鏐 (ryū - archaic character for sake vessel), and 醸 (jō - to brew) all share the radical 酉 (tori). 'Tori' is a pictograph representing a sake vessel, which, as it evolved from ancient times, gradually narrowed at the bottom, resembling the shape of the sake vessels used in the past for aging sake. Originally, 'tori' alone meant sake, but it is said that the addition of the 'sanzui' radical, representing liquid, led to the current character for sake. This 'tori' is also used as the 10th sign of the Chinese zodiac. The month of 'tori' is the month when new grains ripen in October. As it was the month when sake brewing began all at once using the harvested new grains, it was also called the "month of sake." From this, it seems that the sake brewing year ran from October to September of the following year, and October 1st, the sake brewing festival day, became "Sake Day."
The "3rd Sake Day Walk," an educational event hosted by Wajowaraku to expand the sake fan base, will start at 2 PM on Saturday, September 25th, from Mizutani-bashi Park (next to Hotel Seiyo Ginza) and proceed as a parade to Hibiya Park (approx. 2km / approx. 45 minutes).
