Series: Wa-kyo Wa-raku | Part 39: Kagataya Saketen, a Specialty Shop Challenging the World of Local Sake
A Philosophy of Selling What We Want to Sell, Not What Sells
Kagataya Sake Shop: A Specialist in Local Brews
Guided by the philosophy of 'selling what we want to sell, not what sells,' Kagataya Sake Shop pivoted towards specialization around 1980. Since then, we have built our business on three pillars: carefully selected Japanese sake, shochu, and liqueurs, leading us to where we are today.

Challenging Ourselves to Create Markets, Value, and Culture
While 'specialty sake shops' are rare finds when walking through town, perhaps some exist in your neighborhood without you realizing it. In our case, we haven't yet fully established that deep recognition among our local community. While honing our sensibility to reach a wider audience swiftly through the internet, we also want to cherish down-to-earth methods of rooting ourselves in the local area.
We aim to be more than just a shop that passes sake from brewers to customers; we strive to 'create markets,' 'create value,' and 'create culture.' We believe that our ability to 'create' will be the key to our success as a specialty store moving forward.
Aspiring to Be a 'Creative Sake House' That Proposes a Sake-Infused Lifestyle
If brewers are 'sake makers,' then Kagataya Sake Shop's major goal is to be a 'creative sake house.' Sake connects people's hearts and enriches their lives. We want to offer not just sake to our customers, but also the lifestyle and enjoyment that comes with it.
We also propose original events that showcase our shop's unique character. Please check our blog and email newsletter, and stop by when you're in the neighborhood. Even among shops with the same 'specialty' label, there are individual differences in their curated selections, what they emphasize, what they want to convey, how they recommend, and their sake events. Beyond choosing a sake brand, we hope you'll enjoy choosing your specialty shop as well.
Furthermore, many people seem to unconsciously perceive Japanese sake as difficult, something to be approached with formality, or only for special occasions. We encourage you to relax and enjoy sake a bit more casually, considering different drinking occasions, food pairings, and the pleasure of aging.
