The Iconic "OPIUM" That Adorns YVES SAINT LAURENT's History
The design theme for the new YVES SAINT LAURENT store, an artistic project helmed by Creative Director Stefano Pilati, is "OPIUM." The concept is to interpret YVES SAINT LAURENT's historical essence in a modern way, visually expressing the brand's future roadmap. "Opium" derives its name from the fragrance "Opium," launched by Yves Saint Laurent in 1977. The sensational naming, meaning "opium," and its mystical scent captivated and intoxicated people, drawing them in.
For this project, Stefano Pilati featured "Opium," one of YVES SAINT LAURENT's most iconic elements. He departed significantly from the modernist store environment of geometric patterns, which emphasized neutrality, by coating the store space in "Opium"-colored lacquer and accenting it with matte or glossy gold brass fittings.
As part of its eco-friendly innovations for the renovation, the store utilizes "Ductal," an ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete designed for long-lasting furniture that reduces CO2 emissions and wastewater. By combining precious and familiar materials, it embodies YVES SAINT LAURENT's important duality—specifically, rough sophistication, industrial elegance, and the transformation of the ordinary into the extraordinary.
A Glamorous Reception Party Attended by Celebrities
Over 200 guests attended the reception party for the reopening, with celebrities such as Mari Natsuki, Tadanobu Asano, and Ai Tominaga gracing the event in the latest YVES SAINT LAURENT Autumn/Winter 2011 collection. Furthermore, a surprise live performance by Mari Natsuki singing Edith Piaf's "Hymne à l'amour," arranged as an homage to Monsieur Yves Saint Laurent, made for a dazzling night befitting the opening of the new YVES SAINT LAURENT Omotesando store.
