A New Boutique Offering Leather Goods, Omotesando Exclusives, and Beauty Products
Hermès opened its new store in Tokyo's Omotesando on Sunday, February 28, 2021. The 488-square-meter store showcases items that embody Hermès' creativity and exceptional craftsmanship, within a space that reflects a deep respect for Japanese artists, materials, and techniques.
The store's design was conceived by the Paris-based architectural firm RDAI (Rena Dumas Architecture Intérieure). The facade facing Omotesando is a striking feature.
The stone wall, reminiscent of the pathway to Meiji Jingu shrine, has been preserved and is surrounded by a copper-colored stainless steel fence, evoking a bamboo grove. At night, indirect lighting concealed behind the fence accentuates the stone wall. The design incorporates the rich nature of the Omotesando area as both a material and a metaphor.
At the first-floor entrance, a motif of the maison's iconic Ex-Libris (bookplate) is displayed, mirroring the Faubourg Saint-Honoré store in Paris. The floor features two types of green stone, inspired by Japanese tatami mats, and a portion of the floor is covered by a rug specially woven for the Omotesando store, in a color reminiscent of forest moss.
In the atrium staircase, a bamboo sculpture by Japanese bamboo artist Seiryu Honda, inspired by the infinite Möbius strip and cloud formations, is on display. This piece, created specifically for the store, reveals different forms as one ascends or descends the stairs, showcasing a beautiful harmony between the essence of Japanese bamboo craft, renowned worldwide, and contemporary architecture.
In the women's silk corner on the first floor, the scarf "Duo Cosmique" by Kohei Kyomori will be available for the first time globally. Kyomori also designed the window display, which complements the scarf's concept. To the left of the entrance on the first floor are the home collection, including tableware, and the men's silk corner. Further inside, you'll find the leather goods section, featuring bags and small accessories, followed by the equestrian items.
The walls, covered in wood paneling and bamboo parquetry, form gentle curves. Shelves set into thick columns display key items, primarily shoes. Fragrances, including the new men's perfume "H24" launched concurrently with the store opening, and beauty products such as the "Rouge Hermès" lipstick, are scheduled to be introduced from mid-April.
The second floor, bathed in bright sunlight, is a serene space divided by movable partitions, housing both women's and men's collections. It features spacious fitting rooms for women and salon-like fitting rooms for men. The men's fitting rooms are also slated to offer "Sur Mesure" bespoke services in the future.
Additionally, on display for the store's opening were a wooden bicycle newly developed by the bespoke order department "Orizon," special items such as surfboards and skateboards designed by Jan Bucheric in the "Cheval de Fête" pattern created exclusively for the Omotesando store, and cashmere silk scarves and ties in the "Mega Chariot" design by Daisuke Nomura (the bicycle display has concluded).
The Hermès Omotesando store is a special space where customers, both long-standing patrons with deep ties to Japan and new clients, can discover the creativity and exceptional craftsmanship that Hermès proudly offers.
