Following the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011,Great East Japan Earthquakein early April, about a month later. While many foreigners were refraining from traveling to Japan, Paul Smith did not change his planned trip to Japan. Over 30 staff members who were supposed to accompany him could not travel, and Paul himself reportedly came to Japan alone, brushing aside strong objections. This was a heartfelt action from Paul, who has visited Japan regularly for nearly 30 years since the early 1980s, respecting Japanese culture and loving its people.
The show held six months later became a venue to deliver Paul's love for Japan to more people. This exhibition will be a reportage by photographer Hiroyasu Masaki, who followed the show held two years ago from the preparation stages to the day of the event.
To coincide with the exhibition, a photo book of the show's images will be released in a limited edition of 1,000 copies. One of these copies will be kept by Paul himself, and the remaining 1 to 999 copies will all be numbered and available at Paul Smith directly managed stores in Japan and overseas, the official online shop, and bookstores nationwide. Furthermore, all photo books sold at Paul Smith directly managed stores will include Paul's autograph and a special binding with a cover made of original fabric.
This photo book will be sold for 3,900 yen (4,095 yen including tax), and 3.9% of the sales will be donated through the Japanese Red Cross Society to aid in the reconstruction efforts for the Great East Japan Earthquake. Additionally, a selection of this exhibition will be held simultaneously at the Paul Smith Sendai store.
