Exclusive Trench Coats Arrive

For its 2018 Spring/Summer Men's Collection, Maison Margiela presents two exclusive trench coat styles in collaboration with Mackintosh.

These coats showcase a new design that reflects Mackintosh's unique craftsmanship, applied to the iconic 'Mac' coat, which Maison Margiela's Creative Director John Galliano considers akin to an accessory.

Each coat is finished by hand using a unique technique developed in 1823 by Charles Macintosh, the founder of Mackintosh. Rubber is applied between two layers of fabric and bonded, creating a highly waterproof material. The seams are bonded with a special adhesive, achieving a seamless look.


The white version, inspired by the iconic white lab coats worn by Maison Margiela staff, is a color adopted for the first time among Mackintosh's wide range of color options.

This white coat, longer than existing 'Mac' coats and reflecting the attitude of a lab coat, incorporates Maison Margiela's signature details throughout, such as white horn buttons, steel eyelets, and four white stitches.

The other design is based on a coat from Mackintosh's archives and employs 'decortiqué,' a technique introduced by John Galliano in his 2017 Spring/Summer 'Artisanal' collection.

Decortiqué is a technique that reveals the essential structure of a garment by cutting away excess material, exposing the lining and underlying construction. Here, the fabric and details remain intact, but the collar and cuffs are accented, evolving the traditional silhouette into a modern and innovative style.

Both trench coats possess an authentic and sophisticated look, strongly reflecting the spirit of the 2018 Spring/Summer Men's Collection.
