The standout feature of this collaboration between Nigel Cabourn and Converse, the “ALL STAR N-C HI,” is its use of Ventile, a fabric developed in Britain during World War II.

There are several types of British-made Ventile, differing in yarn type and weave density. The fabric used here is a heavy weight of 300 grams per square meter. This is the original developed at the Shirley Institute, immediately adopted by the R.A.F. (Royal Air Force), and used for pilot flight suits. Ventile, though a natural fiber, exhibits remarkable water-repellent properties and is credited with increasing the survival rate of downed aircrews from nearly zero to 80% at the time.

For this collaboration, Nigel Cabourn’s utmost priority was to use the original Ventile that saved so many British pilots.

As Ventile, which is less breathable than regular cotton, was used, ventilation panels are incorporated on both sides of the shoes, also serving as a design point. The choice to adopt a functional material rather than focusing on superficial design is truly characteristic of Nigel Cabourn.

Furthermore, to withstand rigorous military training, the toe caps are reinforced, and the top eyelets have been changed to D-rings, similar to the vintage model, allowing for quick fastening and unfastening. These are details that embody Nigel Cabourn’s dedication.
