Launching this season, the men's knitwear brand "VANDORI" will open its Aoyama flagship store on Friday, August 30th. Pursuing a design of "Fit in Well" that melts into the body with no excess, the brand selects the finest natural fibers such as cashmere and fine wool, and develops high-class knitwear through the hands of skilled artisans. Capturing the Shadow of Postmodernism in Photography
──What were the key points you focused on for this season's lookbook shoot, and what should people pay attention to?
We aimed to create an atmosphere of understated quality without being ostentatious. For the location shoot, we brought in bricklayers from the Netherlands and meticulously hand-stacked approximately 90,000 bricks to create the setting.
We perceive this as a fusion of architecture that has endured for centuries and will continue to do so, with contemporary lifestyles and real clothes. This concept maximally embodies the shadow of postmodernism that VANDORI aims for.
──What is this season's key look (coordination)?
All the patterns on our core knitwear products are original. Furthermore, by switching knit textures, we've emphasized our "Fit in Well" policy to make the wearer's physique appear more robust and beautiful. We designed it to show a gradual strengthening from the waist up to the neck. Therefore, we've paired these pieces with slim, simple pants from other brands.
A 100% Cashmere Outer Robe Expressing Birds at Rest
──What are the key items and key colors this season?
The first key item is the 100% cashmere outer robe. We've crafted it with high-quality cashmere and a ribbed knit structure, designed for ease of movement.
In Europe, where car culture is deeply rooted, we envisioned a driving scene. We removed all the buttons from the front and narrowed the front width to maximize the body's silhouette when worn. This design emphasizes a widening from the chest to the waist, expressing the image of birds resting their wings. The available colors are dark grey, blue jeans, and snow white, reflecting the season's theme of the stone city, Dusseldorf.
Another key item is the all-over patterned crew neck knit. This knit, made from high-quality merino wool, reflects the sky's blue shimmering on the cobblestones of Dusseldorf, and the orange glow of the stones at dusk. Therefore, we offer it in two colors: blue and orange.
──What "materials" did you focus on this season?
VANDORI is a brand of superior knitwear. The yarns we use are primarily the finest cashmere, silk, merino wool, and lamb's wool sourced both domestically and internationally. In particular, we use Shetland-type wool from New Zealand's South Island, known for its spongy texture and lightness, as well as ultra-fine wool, silk, and cashmere raised only in the mountainous regions around Cook Mountain. We are committed to ensuring that all our items feel comfortable against the skin.
──What is the rewarding aspect of being a designer?
I believe the power of clothing is immeasurable. The experiences I've gained through business, traveling the world and interacting with people through their food, housing, and cars – I strive to translate these experiences into knitwear designs. If there are people who cherish these products, it feels as though I am sharing those experiences with them. That, I believe, is the greatest joy as a designer.
──A message to your fans?
Our branding aims to leverage global resources for knitwear materials and production, focusing on "Fit In Well" and incorporating Japanese creativity with stories tailored to the climate and culture of each country. Please look forward to our future BIG BANG.
We aspire to create not just "MADE IN JAPAN," but "POWERED BY JAPAN, CREATED BY JAPAN." We hope you will cherish our creations for a long time.
