CIVILIZED Fall/Winter 2013-14 Collection
CIVILIZED
Focus on unique styling with a military feel
The concept of "high functionality for everyday wear" realized
Regarding this season's "CIVILIZED" look shoot, designer Satoshi Okukawa explains, "For each outfit, we take two shots: one from the front and one showing movement. The front shot highlights the basic aspects of the items used, while the shot with movement is intended to showcase the details and changes in expression." We want to savor his unique worldview.

A collection that blends classic materials with high functionality
──What is the theme/concept for the 2013-14 Autumn/Winter collection?
We haven't set a theme for the season. Instead, we express the core idea of CIVILIZED, "high functionality for everyday wear," each season.
This season, we've focused on warm materials like tweed, melton, and knit. While using classic fabrics, we've incorporated high functionality through patterns, details, and innovative features.
──What is the key look (outfit) for this season?
We've consistently offered jackets since the brand's inception, and this season, we're proposing a style that pairs a jacket with a coat.
It's an outfit that combines a tweed jacket and 3/4 length pants suit with a coat, creating a unique balance with a subtle military feel.
Confidence in the construction of the "MILITARY FIELD COAT"
──What are the key items and key colors?
The key item is the coat introduced in the key look above, the "MILITARY FIELD COAT." To ensure it can be worn over a jacket without restricting movement, we've developed a pattern that allows for high mobility without compromising the layered look. Details like pockets placed according to body and arm movements, and materials that are lightweight enough not to be burdensome while still fulfilling the coat's primary role, are all fused together to create a coat with a unique balance.
──What materials did you focus on this season?
It's the "BJ" material used in the MILITARY FIELD COAT. BJ stands for "the BRAIN of JAPAN," named to signify the convergence of Japanese ingenuity and intellect.
It's a synthetic fiber with a natural surface texture and unique feel, possessing excellent shape retention. The BJ used this time has been treated with durable water repellency, making it a highly functional material that can adapt to changing weather conditions.
──What is the most rewarding aspect of being a designer?
I believe it's similar to any profession: by re-examining things that are often taken for granted, new possibilities emerge. There's no single correct answer, so the process of thinking, evolving, and repeating that cycle allows for understanding and learning.
There's no single correct answer, so the process of thinking, evolving, and repeating that cycle allows for understanding and learning.
──A message to your fans.
I believe that anything needed has a reason for its existence. We will continue to pursue clothing creation that allows people to feel the meaning of wearing clothes, the possibilities, joy, and excitement that clothing holds.
