Shosaku Kondo was a leading figure in bamboo lighting design. He wore three hats: designer, craft artist, and artisan. His work, which leveraged the material's inherent properties while incorporating industrial design principles, earned international acclaim and influenced many craft scenes. Now, a pendant lamp designed by Kondo in the 1960s is being reissued. Production had ceased in 2008 due to the aging artisan workforce, but in 2015, through Kondo's efforts, the craft was successfully passed on to young bamboo artisans in Beppu. The lamp is now being reproduced using the original full-scale patterns to guide the weaving process. The integrated shade, crafted from four-ply woven bamboo and molded acrylic, forms a beautifully curved silhouette. Even after 40 years, its allure remains undimmed.
