Artek Offers a Special Edition of a Product Linked to the Paimio Sanatorium, the Aalto Couple's Iconic Work.

Featuring "Mint" and "Light Grey" Used in the Interior of a Masterpiece Building
The Aalto couple (Alvar Aalto and Aino Aalto) added softness and comfort to modernist functionalism, greatly influencing the next generation of architects and designers. The "606 Side Table," designed for their iconic Paimio Sanatorium (a tuberculosis sanatorium in Finland), is celebrating its 90th anniversary with a special product release.

After starting his career as an architect, the Aalto couple established the furniture brand "Artek" in 1935 to promote modernist culture. They played a significant role in popularizing Finnish design and influencing the design world. The Paimio Sanatorium in Finland, designed by the couple, is a medical facility that opened in 1933. This modernist building, nestled in a deep forest, with its colorful interiors designed to brighten the spirits of recuperating patients, is known as a prime example of the human modernism uniquely developed by the Aalto couple. The "606 Side Table," designed by Aino Aalto for the facility, is constructed with a steel tube frame and a birch plywood top. At the time, it was used as a stool for changing shoes.
This year marks the 90th anniversary of the "606 Side Table," designed by Aino Aalto for the Paimio Sanatorium lobby. To commemorate this milestone, a special edition will be released on September 21st. The steel tubes will be available in two colors: "Mint," inspired by the colors used on the ceilings of patient rooms and reading rooms, and "Light Grey," inspired by the metal handrails on the stairs. These will be paired with four variations: a light grey top, a honey-toned top that highlights the wood grain, and a walnut top.
