A mattress that affects sleep quality is a big purchase, both physically and financially. However, it's often difficult to try it out before buying. Now, Moxy Osaka Honmachi and Koala, an Australian bedding and furniture brand, have collaborated. A special accommodation plan allows guests not just to lie on the popular Koala Mattress, but to actually sleep on it. This is your chance to be embraced by the much-talked-about "Koala"!

Improve Sleep Quality by Rethinking Your Bedding
With more time spent at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, items that make home life more comfortable and support self-maintenance are seeing increased sales. Furthermore, it is well-known that sleep quality, which helps resolve accumulated physical and mental stress, is directly linked to improving quality of life (QOL) and even health issues, thus drawing significant attention.
The mattress is, after all, a major factor influencing your sleep environment. "I know, I know, but good mattresses are expensive, right? And you can't try them out before buying, so they're not easy to afford." Here's some good news for you.
"Why not try it out?" Koala, an Australian bedding and furniture brand, has partnered with Moxy Osaka Honmachi. For a limited time until December 31, 2020, they are offering a "Koala Sleep Well Room" featuring Koala Mattresses and Koala Pillows, available in only 4 rooms per day. Intrigued, I headed to Osaka to be embraced by the rumored Koala and indulge in a night of deep sleep!
Let us introduce "Koala" here. Koala is a bedding brand founded in Australia in 2015 by two former rugby players who wanted to develop a mattress that reduces physical strain and improves sleep quality. They operate a direct-to-consumer (D2C) business model without physical stores. The name "Koala" comes from the fact that koalas are said to be the "animal that sleeps the most," spending about 20 hours a day sleeping. They also partner with the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and donate a portion of their sales to support koala conservation efforts.
Have you seen the striking advertisement video where a glass of wine is placed on a mattress, and an adult man jumps right next to it? Yes, that one. Koala expanded into Japan in October 2017. They have been increasing sales in Japan with their Japanese-market Koala Mattresses and Koala Pillows, developed through research tailored to Japanese sleeping postures and preferences.
This collaboration was sparked by Koala's desire to further improve the sleep quality of Japanese people, who suffer from chronic sleep deprivation, aligning with their mission to "deliver deep and comfortable sleep to everyone." By partnering with Moxy Osaka Honmachi, they aimed to let people actually sleep on the "Koala Mattress," leading to this collaboration.

Moxy Osaka Honmachi, where the "Koala Sleep Well Room" made its debut, is a hotel that opened in November 2017 as part of Marriott International's lifestyle hotel brand, "Moxy Hotels." While lifestyle hotels have rapidly increased in recent years, Moxy Osaka Honmachi has a clear concept. The moment you enter the lobby, you're strongly conveyed the message, "We want you to enjoy your stay, including the public areas." The public spaces are furnished with chairs and desks of various designs, allowing both cafe patrons and hotel guests to spend their time freely in their preferred spots. The art by local Osaka artists is also stylish. The bar, which also serves as the front desk, is open 24 hours, which is quite innovative.
The "Moxy Cafe & Bar" is open 24 hours. Various events, such as DJ nights, are held, primarily on weekends.
The lounge is equipped with table soccer and board games for guests to enjoy. These can also be an opportunity to interact with other guests.
The welcome drink, "Got Moxy High!" (FREE), is served to hotel guests. It's a cocktail made with shochu and pink grapefruit, and its cute pink color matches the corporate branding! Non-alcoholic options are also available.
The fitness gym on the second floor is also accessible to guests 24 hours a day.

The large table on the first floor is a trademark of Moxy Osaka Honmachi. However, social distancing is in effect.
The guest rooms are simple, but thoughtfully equipped with the necessary facilities and amenities for guests to enjoy their stay in their own style. For example, the desk, with the concept of "lower it if you want to use it," is elegantly mounted on the wall.
The Koala Mattress with the sheets removed is on the left. By controlling airflow within the mattress, it successfully dissipates heat and moisture to the outside. It's also cool even in summer and has excellent antibacterial properties.
In the "Koala Sleep Well Room," the "Moxy Sleeper Twin," which normally features a Simmons mattress, is equipped with a Koala Mattress (semi-double, 120cm width) and Koala Pillows. Despite the stated area of 20㎡, it feels more spacious than the numbers suggest.
The Koala drawstring bag, Koala stainless steel bottle, Koala eco-bag, and Koala notebook included as plan benefits were all created specifically for this project. They are currently only available here!
The plan also includes four original collaboration-exclusive goods (Koala stainless steel bottle, Koala eco-bag, Koala notebook, and Koala drawstring bag). While I briefly considered their potential future value, I immediately started using them.
As for the mattress itself, pressing it with my hand gives the impression that it's "a bit firm." I learned that while many people in Western countries sleep on their sides, Japanese people, perhaps due to a history of sleeping on futons on the floor, tend to sleep on their backs and prefer firmer mattresses. Therefore, the Japanese-market mattress is made firmer than the one sold in Australia.
When I actually lay down, I realized it perfectly supports the body. This is thanks to the "3-layer polyurethane foam structure," which combines a firm high-resilience layer, a soft low-resilience layer, and an intermediate layer that absorbs impact. By blending low-resilience and high-resilience materials, it achieves a moderate elasticity.
The top layer uses "CloudCell," a proprietary urethane material. This blend of low- and high-resilience materials supports the body at specific points rather than evenly. The bottom layer uses high-resilience material to support the body, preventing excessive sinking and maintaining a moderate elasticity that facilitates turning over. When I lay down and closed my eyes to fully experience this 3-layer structure, which includes an intermediate layer for balanced impact absorption, my body felt lightly enveloped and then supported by the firm bottom layer. However, I immediately lost consciousness thereafter. The "Koala" is truly formidable.
When I tried turning over, I understood why the wine glass in the video didn't fall. This mattress hardly transmits vibrations. The "Zero Disturbance Technology" absorbs shocks to the mattress, reducing the impact. With high vibration absorption, you won't feel the vibrations even if someone next to you turns over or jumps onto the bed, ensuring your sleep is undisturbed.
We must also mention the zoning method as a key feature. For example, the weight on the mattress differs between the head and feet when lying down. The Koala Mattress adjusts its firmness according to this weight, distributing body pressure and guiding you into a comfortable sleeping posture. The central part, corresponding to the waist, is firmer to provide solid support, while the head, shoulder, and foot areas are softer, designed to maintain an ideal sleeping posture. The firmness is adjusted by subtly altering the number of cuts in the mattress through the zoning method.
The "Koala Pillow," launched in December 2019. Its numerous perforations allow heat and humidity that tend to build up around the head and neck to escape. The removable cover is made from Tencel, a fiber derived from eucalyptus.

The Koala Pillow applies the technology of the Koala Mattress to a pillow. It uses polyurethane gel foam, which incorporates gel into a low-resilience material, offering a distinctively bouncy feel. It is also designed with zoning to avoid putting strain on the neck and shoulders, with a slightly firmer outer edge supporting the neck. Your head sinks in comfortably without sinking too deeply, achieving a perfect balance. The price is also reasonable, so be careful not to impulsively purchase it on the spot.
After spending a night with the Koala Mattress, where various technologies and innovations harmoniously combine to achieve an ideal sleeping posture and comfort, the first thing I noticed the next morning was how refreshed I felt upon waking. I haven't woken up feeling this clear-headed in years. Checking your body's condition the morning after might be one of the highlights of this plan. The checkout time for the "Koala Sleep Well Room" is 12:00 PM, so be sure to sleep in without setting an alarm.
One last piece of useful information: guests who stay in the "Koala Sleep Well Room" receive a coupon code for a 10% discount on Koala Mattresses on the official Koala website. You can get a comfortable daily sleep, embraced by "Koala," at a great price.
