A Brother Duo Gaining Attention for Designs That Transcend Conventional Furniture
The Campana brothers are a designer duo consisting of Fernando, born in 1961, and Humberto, born in 1953. Raised in the suburbs of São Paulo, Brazil, they draw inspiration from Brazilian streets, nature, animals, landscapes, and the lives of ordinary people. Using everyday materials such as wood scraps, pipes, rubber hoses, tissue paper, string, and packaging materials, they create chairs, lamps, and other items. Today, they are recognized as leading Brazilian designers.
This exhibition traces the 20-year trajectory of the Campana brothers from 1989 to 2009. It was organized by the renowned German design museum, the Vitra Design Museum, and after its debut at the Turin Design Museum in Italy in 2013, it has been touring the world. This marks its first arrival in Japan.
Over 100 Works Showcase Two Decades of Activity
From the touring exhibition, this show focuses on "recycling," "the fusion of natural and artificial materials," and "the integration of multiculturalism" to present the full scope of their work, inspired by immunity and antibodies. It features their representative art pieces, including chairs and sofas, along with photographs and interview footage.
Their innovative and conceptual design work, such as the "Banquet Chair" made from a patchwork of stuffed animals like pandas, lions, and crocodiles, is well worth seeing. The exhibition will also be held at Sogo Kobe from May 10 (Sunday) to May 15 (Friday).
