Special Exhibition of Japanese Style "Colors & Materials" Held

A special exhibition of Japanese style, "Colors & Materials - Harmony of Materials and Colors -," focusing on the harmony of various materials and beautiful colors such as wood, lacquer, paper, dyes, and tin, which have long been richly rooted in Japanese life, will be held at each Cassina ixc. store starting August 19 (Wednesday).

Text by KAJII Makoto (OPENERS)

Materials and colors that add depth to life

Cassina ixc. has previously introduced coordinations that combine modern interior spaces suited to contemporary lifestyles with traditional Japanese items. This time, focusing on the simple beauty of various "materials" and "colors," they have selected Japanese雑貨 (zakka - miscellaneous goods) to match the theme, alongside Cassina's new items. They will present harmonious, Japanese-style coordinations that encourage a re-evaluation of daily life.

Rich variations in color, material, and form

The dining chair "CAB," an iconic Italian modern design since its debut in 1977, features a groundbreaking design where a jacket of high-quality thick leather envelops the frame. It molds to the body with use, deepening its character over time. In addition to the existing six colors, nine new colors, including blue and China red, have been added, allowing for a choice from a total of 15 variations.

New specifications have been added to the graphical table collection "TOREI," designed by Luca Nichetto in 2012. In addition to the existing rectangular shape, square, circular, and triangular tabletops are now available. The square tables come with a marble top option, while the rectangular and circular tables offer a red stained finish. Combining pieces of different heights and sizes can evoke the playful feeling of childhood building block games.

The "PECS" desk, named after Marcel Breuer's birthplace, Hungary, was designed in 1951 for his home in Connecticut. It was first re-edited in 1963 by Dino Gavina, the founder of Simon, and is a masterpiece. It will now be added to the Cassina Simon Collection.

"INDOCHINE" is a wooden adaptation of the "LC7" metal-frame armchair, designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1927 before she met Le Corbusier. It was part of a collection by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand at the 1929 Salon d'Automne, achieving great success. The original design had three legs, but due to stability issues, it was changed to four.

A selection of Japanese雑貨 infused with Japanese craftsmanship

The Japanese雑貨 selection features goods selected with the theme of "materials" and "colors," available for a limited time. For "wood," there is "Hikiyose," a brand of wooden products from La Luz, which has a woodworking factory in Odawara, famous for its kamaboko and woodwork. For "lacquer," there is "hyakushiki," which started in 1994 when traditional craftsman Yasuto Kosaka succeeded in matching lacquer with glass, utilizing the techniques of the once-flourishing Kiso lacquerware. For "paper," there is the product brand "Studio GALA" led by Ryoichi Kobayashi, who creates high-quality Japanese design items that fit into modern life while preserving the culture and craftsmanship passed down through generations across Japan.

For "dyes," there is "Some Shiki Yoshioka," a Kyoto-based dye house continuing since the late Edo period, creating beautiful dyed textiles from plant dyes derived from grasses, trees, flowers, and fruits. For "tin," there is the new brand "syouryu" from Shimatani Shoryu Kobo, which has specialized in manufacturing temple bells since its founding in 1909, and "NAGAE+," born in 2015 as a new Japanese lifestyle brand in Takaoka, one of Japan's leading metal industry towns with a 400-year history.
