USM Haller in a Special Color to Celebrate its 50th Anniversary

The "USM Haller" system furniture, which was added to MoMA's permanent collection in 2001, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. To commemorate this milestone, special edition units in a unique color for the Japanese market will be exhibited and available for purchase starting in late July. These units, featuring a three-tier shelf with doors, are a special specification available only this time.

USM Haller Turns 50

USM is globally renowned for its system furniture, including the "USM Haller." Founded in 1885, USM initially manufactured metal components such as keys and window frames. Fifty years ago, they developed the "USM Haller," expanding their system furniture line and establishing themselves as one of Switzerland's leading furniture manufacturers.

The origin story behind the "USM Haller's" creation 50 years ago is quite interesting. The development of this system furniture was deeply influenced by Fritz Haller, an architect considered one of the most influential figures in late 20th-century Switzerland.

It all began when USM commissioned the architect, who would later lend his name to the product, to design a new factory.

Tasked with designing a factory and offices with an expandable and flexible structure, Haller created a facility that could be enlarged or reduced in size as needed, utilizing modular steel frames. After the building's completion, the then-CEO of USM, Paul Schärer Jr., felt the need for office furniture that would complement the aesthetic of the new, functional office space and approached Haller to develop it.

The office furniture designed and manufactured by Haller and Schärer at that time was characterized by its flexible expandability and functional beauty, mirroring the factory Haller had designed. This marked the birth of the "USM Haller" system furniture. The new factory and offices, along with the system furniture, garnered significant media attention and captivated the public. Subsequently, USM established a production system for "USM Haller," expanded its sales channels, and the product was added to MoMA's permanent collection, leading to its current global acclaim as an interior brand.

In celebration of the "USM Haller's" anniversary, USM U. Schärer & Sons, the Japanese subsidiary of USM, has produced a "50th Anniversary Brochure." This luxurious publication details the history of "USM Haller," its appeal, and USM's current initiatives. The brochure is currently being offered as a gift to the first 100 members who register on the USM online shop. For detailed application instructions, please visit the online shop at http://www.usm-shop.jp/.

Special Edition Unit for the Japanese Market

The special edition units released to commemorate the 50th anniversary will be exhibited and sold in limited quantities exclusively at nine USM retail locations nationwide, including the "USM Modular Furniture Showroom" in Marunouchi, Tokyo. This three-tier shelf unit features an extension door (with insert box) on the bottom tier and drop-down doors on the top and middle tiers, representing a special specification available only on this occasion.

While USM products often feature monochrome or vivid color palettes, these panels boast a vibrant yet soft hue, adding a special touch. Although options for additional modules or expansions are not available, this unique color offers a fresh accent for spaces, even for existing USM system furniture owners.
