A Key to Deciphering Unknown Information
In 2020, museums worldwide were forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. MEDICOM TOY has actively supported the art world through official collaborations with the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands, the Louvre Museum in France, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
The new partner is the British Museum in London, England. Its origins trace back to the personal collection of Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753), a physician, naturalist, and art lover. Sloane, who served as president of the Royal Academy and dean of the Royal College of Physicians, bequeathed his entire collection to the nation, stipulating that it be made accessible to the public. Through the efforts of figures like Arthur Onslow, Speaker of the House of Commons, the "British Museum Act" was passed by Parliament in 1753. Among the many precious artifacts displayed under the principle of "free admission," the "Rosetta Stone," considered the most significant discovery in Egyptian archaeology, stands as a symbol of the museum.
The Rosetta Stone is part of a stele discovered in 1799 during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign in the port city of Rosetta. The granodiorite stone, measuring 114.4 cm in height, 72.3 cm in width, 27.9 cm in thickness, and weighing 760 kg, bears a decree issued in Memphis in 196 BC by Ptolemy V, inscribed in three scripts: ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs (then undeciphered), Demotic script (a cursive form of hieroglyphs), and Greek.
The Rosetta Stone, then in French possession, was transported to Britain amidst the chaos of war and publicly displayed at the British Museum in 1802. In 1814, the British physicist Thomas Young demonstrated that Demotic script was derived from hieroglyphs. In 1822, the French archaeologist Jean-François Champollion, known as the "father of Egyptology," succeeded in deciphering the hieroglyphs. Thanks to these two geniuses, who were also rivals, other ancient Egyptian texts could subsequently be translated, with the Rosetta Stone playing a crucial role as a key to unlocking unknown information.
