Japan's Future, Predicted by a Master of Black Humor 50 Years Ago
"Tomorrow is Sunday, and the Day After Tomorrow Too..." is the fourth installment in Fujiko A. Fujio's "Shiroi Dowa" (White Fairy Tales) series of black humor short stories, published in the April 1971 issue of "COM." The protagonist, Boichiro Tamiya, is a gentle giant of a young man, exceptionally kind-hearted. After graduating from university, he lands a job at a trading company. On his first day, his mother fusses over him, packing snacks and giving him pocket money, instructing him to "take a taxi home if you get tired." However, the timid Boichiro, terrified by the rush hour crowds on the train, barely makes it to the company building. Overwhelmed by nerves, he hesitates at the entrance. When a suspicious security guard shouts at him, he flees in a panic...
Though created half a century ago during Japan's period of rapid economic growth, the story's shocking conclusion, which seems to predict Japan's future, is truly astonishing. This work is available for a preview on the official website for Fujiko A. Fujio Digital Selection, released as an e-book by Shogakukan, within the section titledFujiko A. Fujio's Black Humor. If you haven't read it yet, we highly recommend taking this opportunity to experience Mr. A's work.
The "VAG Boichiro Tamiya" stands approximately 60mm tall, fitting in the palm of your hand. It comes in five colors: a monochrome version faithful to the original artwork, and four other color variations inspired by the work's imagery.
