Following last February's "BE@RBRICK LEONARD DE VINCI Mona Lisa 100% & 400%," which was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of the Mona Lisa and sold out in an instant, a BE@RBRICK based on another masterpiece supervised by the Louvre Museum is set to be released.

A Masterpiece Long Cherished as a Symbol of Freedom

The motif for this release is "Liberty Leading the People" (original title: La Liberté guidant le peuple) by Eugène Delacroix, a leading figure of French Romanticism. Painted in 1830, this oil on canvas measures 260 x 325 cm and was created to commemorate the July Revolution, which overthrew the French King Charles X at the time. It has been housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France—one of the world's largest museums—since 1874 and is widely known in Japan as "Liberty Leading the People" or "The Goddess of Liberty Leading the People."
The woman holding the tricolor flag, which later became the French national flag, in her right hand and a musket with a bayonet in her left, fearlessly leading the people, is not a real person but Marianne, an allegorical representation of France. The man on the left, wearing a black hat and holding a musket, is said to be Delacroix himself, though he did not actually participate in the uprising. Nevertheless, he felt he should at least paint for the nation.
This fusion of a masterpiece, long used as a symbol of "liberty" in numerous social movements and rock band artworks, with BE@RBRICK invites contemplation on the history of revolution.
