A Variable Space Package Where Sliding Doors Connect Wind, Light, and Living Areas
"SLIDING HOUSE": A Real-Scale Model Proposed by Panasonic x Torafu Architects
This spring at Milan Salone, Panasonic and Torafu Architects presented "SLIDING NATURE," a living house that breathes, proposing a new relationship between homes and nature. The real-scale model, "SLIDING HOUSE," was unveiled for the first time at an exhibition for housing industry professionals at Tokyo Big Sight. Fumiko Murata, a stylist, handled the interior styling of the space.

A Proposal for Living Spaces Composed of Sliding Doors
What kind of life can be lived in a 9-meter square, 80-square-meter space with three interconnected sliding doors?―Following the installation exhibit "SLIDING NATURE" at this year's Milan Salone, "SLIDING HOUSE" is a real-scale model expressing a breathing home where the living environment and nature are fused.
Sliding doors are installed within the living space to partition individual rooms. The sliding doors used are from Panasonic'sArchi-spec HIKIDOseries in a white oak finish. Its rustic texture, distinct character, and soft, bright tones impart a gentle impression to the space.
While possessing a simple texture, it has a clear expression, and its soft, bright color tone brings a gentle impression to the space.
Re-importing Japanese Culture
Energy conservation and environmental symbiosis are major challenges in our lives. Sliding doors, which were originally part of Japanese culture, were once replaced by hinged doors with the spread of Western lifestyles. However, the benefits of sliding doors, such as allowing natural breezes and the comfort created by light, are being re-evaluated. In recent years, they have been increasingly adopted in homes, and Panasonic reports a year-on-year increase in demand for sliding doors.
In the "SLIDING HOUSE" real-scale model, the variable space package, with its diverse living arrangements enabled by sliding doors—which default to an open state, unlike hinged doors that default to closed—has garnered significant attention.
Flexible Arrangements Unique to Sliding Doors
By flexibly utilizing sliding doors, it can flexibly accommodate the increase in remote work and SOHO setups in recent years. It presents a system that reflects new lifestyles, such as the rise of "saloneses"—women running their own businesses from home.
The front left is the entrance, the front right is the dining area, and the kitchen is located at the back. Adjacent to the kitchen are the washing machine and bathroom, while on the opposite side are private rooms such as a study or a learning room. Each space is transformed into a flexible area by opening and closing the sliding doors.
The proposed living solutions include "Family Mode," a solution that balances home learning and housework, "SOHO Mode" for comfortable remote work, and "Party Mode" to accommodate large families during holidays like Obon or New Year.
In addition to these usage scenarios, consideration is given to the comfort of the space throughout the changing seasons by "opening" (spring/autumn) and "closing" (summer/winter) the sliding doors, further proposing energy-saving measures.
Furthermore, "SLIDING HOUSE" incorporates Panasonic's new LED lighting fixtures that apply "W light guide technology" to spread soft light across all spaces through surface emission.PaneluminaThe LED dining pendant incorporated in the living-dining area features a frameless, slim design that illuminates softly with uniform light emission, reducing unevenness and glare.
In addition to Panelumina, the switches released this summerAdvance Seriesare also adopted. The design blends seamlessly into the space, the ease of intuitive control, and the superior quality suitable for next-generation homes where smart living is possible are highlighted.
The potential of sliding doors as "one solution" for connecting versatile spaces. By fully opening, fully closing, or partially positioning the three interconnected sliding doors, various family scenes can be envisioned.
