Masayasu Ishihara on "The Work of Editing"

Masayasu Ishihara has been involved in the creation of numerous bestsellers, including Hiroyuki Itsuki's "The River's Drop," Arata Tendo's "Eternal Children," and Ryu Murakami's "13-Year-Old's Workbook."

How are best-selling books and novels planned with their authors? Ishihara describes the work of an editor as "playing the role of a patient midwife, staying close to the author until the work is born."

This is a prime opportunity to hear from a leading figure in the field about the essential work of "editing" in an author's creative process. We hope you will join us.

Masayasu ISHIHARA
Editor / Chief Editorial Officer at Gentosha. Born in Niigata City in 1962. Graduated from Hosei University's Faculty of Economics before joining Kadokawa Shoten. He pursued editing, a path he had been involved in as a part-time job since his university days. In 1993, he co-founded Gentosha with six colleagues, including the current president, Toru Kenjo. He currently serves as a director and senior executive officer at Gentosha, overseeing the editorial and publishing departments. As an editor, he has been instrumental in numerous acclaimed and hit works, such as Eimi Yamada's "Soul Music Lovers Only" (Naoki Prize winner), Hiroyuki Itsuki's "The River's Drop," Ryu Murakami's "13-Year-Old's Workbook," and Arata Tendo's "Eternal Children." In 2007, he appeared on NHK's "Professional: Work of Dignity," solidifying his reputation as one of the industry's foremost bestseller creators.
