Reimagined in Diverse Textiles

The "Polder" sofa is one of Jongerius's signature and most popular pieces. Based on this design, a new sofa, the "Maharam Polder," has been created using various textiles from the New York-based textile company, Maharam.

The textiles used include those designed by Jongerius herself for Maharam, as well as selections from the company's archives. This "Maharam Polder" is a limited edition, with only 100 units produced worldwide, combining these distinct fabrics.

The Maharam Hella Jongerius Collection, featuring "Layers" and "Borders," showcases distinctive, nature-inspired textiles. Intricate motifs are embroidered or layered onto the fabric using computer technology and state-of-the-art cutting and sewing techniques. Complementing these are four upholstery options selected by Jongerius: "Cobblestone," "Exaggerated Plaid by Paul Smith," "Mohair Supreme," and "Hallingdal." All four are exclusive textiles developed by Maharam's design studio in partnership with Kvadrat, a company Maharam has collaborated with since 2001.

As Jongerius herself states, "combining textiles selected from the archives with contemporary embroidery patterns and the latest technology," the "Maharam Polder" builds upon the fusion of high-tech methods and handcraftsmanship found in the original "Polder" by integrating new and archival textiles. It clearly and concisely embodies Jongerius's worldview and design philosophy, along with her exceptional sense of color, honed through her role as Vitra's Color Director.
