Powertrain Features Two Next-Generation Mirai Fuel Cell Stacks

Toyota and Hino Motors aim to reduce average CO2 emissions per new vehicle by 90% by 2050. To achieve this goal, significant improvements in the environmental performance of heavy-duty trucks, which currently account for about 60% of CO2 emissions from domestic commercial vehicles, are necessary.
However, the electrification of commercial vehicles demands not only high environmental performance but also practicality for business use. Particularly for heavy-duty trucks used in trunk line transport, there are high hurdles such as ensuring sufficient cruising range and payload capacity, as well as rapid refueling. For these reasons, they concluded that fuel cell vehicles, which use hydrogen—an energy-dense fuel—are an effective solution.
The jointly developed fuel cell heavy-duty truck is based on Hino's heavy-duty truck, the "Hino Profia." The chassis has been specially designed for optimal packaging of the fuel cell system. Efforts have been made to ensure a sufficient payload capacity through weight reduction.
The powertrain will be equipped with two Toyota FC stacks, newly developed for the next-generation "Mirai," combined with vehicle control technology that applies Hino's expertise in hybrid technology for large vehicles. The target cruising range is 600 km, aiming to achieve both environmental performance and practicality as a commercial vehicle.
