The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Debuts, Featuring the Model's First Hardtop

General Motors (GM) has announced the "Corvette Stingray Convertible," the convertible model of the new "Chevrolet Corvette" scheduled for release in 2020. Furthermore, the racing car "Corvette C8.R," based on this model, was also unveiled to the world for the first time.

Achieves Aerodynamic Drag Equivalent to the Coupe

The new "Corvette Stingray," the eighth generation unveiled in July this year, has undergone a bold evolution from its previous front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout to a mid-engine sports car. Now, the convertible model, the first in Corvette's history to feature a hardtop, has been announced.
In fact, the development of the eighth-generation mid-engine Corvette was planned with the convertible in mind, designed around the center tunnel, just like the coupe. By adopting a hardtop, cabin quietness and security are improved compared to traditional soft tops. It also presents a sleeker exterior.
The design, like the coupe, is inspired by jet fighters. The two-piece roof can be operated while driving at speeds up to 30 mph (approximately 48 km/h) and retracts in 16 seconds. Instead of the previous hydraulic system, six electric motors are equipped in the roof drive mechanism.
The power-operated rear window is designed to improve sound insulation, reduce wind buffeting inside the cabin, and minimize wind noise. Furthermore, by combining the roof system with the same rear spoiler as the coupe's "Z51 Performance Package," there is no difference in aerodynamic drag between the coupe and convertible, resulting in equivalent performance.
The powertrain is the same as the coupe's, featuring a 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces a maximum output of 369 kW (495 hp) and a maximum torque of 637 Nm. It is paired with Chevrolet's first 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The "Corvette C8.R," also announced simultaneously, is scheduled to make its competitive debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January 2020.
The U.S. price for the Corvette Stingray Convertible has been announced as being approximately $7,500 higher than the entry-level "1LT" model of the Corvette Stingray Coupe, which starts under $60,000. Pricing and introduction timing for Japan have not yet been determined.
