Porsche Unveils Mission R, a Fully Electric Motorsport Concept Car
On September 7, Porsche announced the Mission R, a concept for a fully electric competition car that blends cutting-edge technology with sustainable materials, at IAA 2021 in Munich, Germany.
A Vision for Fully Electric Customer Motorsport
The Mission R measures 4,326 mm long, 1,990 mm wide, and 1,190 mm high. The exterior features Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) with a drag reduction system (DRS) on the nose section and rear wing. Its body is notable for being made from natural fiber-reinforced plastic (NFRP), a material based on flax fibers derived from agriculture, which is used for the front spoiler lip, diffuser, and side skirts. The newly developed carbon roof structure, which Porsche engineers and designers call "exoskeleton," combines a safety cage and roof panel.
The interior is designed to focus on the driver in every area, with a display between the steering wheel switches showing relevant race data and a monitor on the steering column displaying images from the side and rearview mirrors. A touch display to the right of the seat allows access to the driver's biometric data, and multiple interior cameras enable live streaming.
The powertrain consists of two newly developed electric motors, delivering 320 kW (435 PS) at the front and 480 kW (635 PS) at the rear. In qualifying mode, the maximum output is 800 kW (1,088 PS), and in race mode, it is 500 kW (680 PS). The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 2.5 seconds and exceeds 300 km/h. On the track, it is said to achieve lap times comparable to the current Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
The battery cells are equipped with innovative oil cooling, which eliminates derating (output reduction due to thermal conditions). Charging is rapid, with the advanced 900-volt technology and Porsche Turbo Charging enabling an 80% charge from 5% in just 15 minutes, with a maximum charging rate of 340 kW.
The Porsche Mission R project showcases the future of one-make series with fully electric cars, akin to the current Porsche Carrera Cup, and brings real and virtual racing closer than ever before. The monocoque driver's module, identical in format, also functions as an esports simulator.
