BMW has launched the "BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé," a four-door model, adding it to the lineup of its flagship 8 Series coupé.
Balancing Exquisite Design with Comfortable Living
The "BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé" is the third body type in the 8 Series lineup, following the coupé and convertible. Its dimensions are 5,085mm long, 1,930mm wide, and 1,400mm high. To accommodate the four doors, it is 230mm longer than the coupé, with a wheelbase extended by 205mm to 3,025mm. This creates a spacious interior that feels remarkably different from the coupé model.
The use of carbon fiber in the internal structure (center tunnel) of the body frame, known as Carbon Core, significantly enhances rigidity. Coupled with advanced design techniques, the roofline tapers elegantly from the rear to the C-pillar and rear fender, creating a beautifully sculpted and refined body style.
The suspension is specifically engineered for the Gran Coupé. A rear track widened by 30mm compared to the coupé, Integral Active Steering, and Adaptive M Professional suspension work in harmony to deliver the "driving pleasure" without compromise, even with the extended wheelbase.
The powertrain options include three choices: the "840i Gran Coupé" with a 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline engine producing 340ps (250kW) and 500Nm of torque; the "840d xDrive Gran Coupé" with a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine delivering 319ps (235kW) and 680Nm; and the "850i xDrive Gran Coupé" featuring a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline engine with 530ps (390kW) and 750Nm.
All models are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The xDrive models feature all-wheel drive, while the 840i utilizes a rear-wheel-drive (FR) configuration, a first for the series.
In terms of features, standard equipment includes the "Traffic Jam Assistant with Hands-Off Function," the "BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant" activated by voice commands like "OK, BMW," and the comprehensive telematics service "BMW ConnectedDrive," similar to other models.
Pricing ranges from 11.52 million to 12.98 million yen for the 840i Gran Coupé, 12.26 million to 13.72 million yen for the 840d xDrive, and 17.15 million yen for the 850i xDrive Gran Coupé.
