The 4-door "Gran Coupé" Arrives for the BMW 2 Series
BMW has expanded its lineup with the new 2 Series Gran Coupé, the first 4-door coupé in the premium compact segment, and has begun accepting orders. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in April 2020.
Balancing Sporty Design with Everyday Practicality
BMW's 4-door coupés, starting with the 6 Series Gran Coupé in 2012, have since expanded to the 4 Series and 8 Series across their respective segments. This combination of design, driving dynamics, and four-door practicality has earned widespread acclaim. With the debut of the 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW now completes its 4-door coupé lineup across all segments.
The 2 Series Gran Coupé is introduced as a new option for discerning adults in modern society—a car that offers uncompromising style, urban-friendly dimensions, practical four-door access, and refined sophistication.
With dimensions of 4,526mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,420mm in height, the car fits within the confines of mechanical parking garages. It is based on the front-wheel-drive platform, similar to the 1 Series that debuted in August.
The exterior features a wide kidney grille at the front, with a new design for the vertically arranged kidney bars in silver, accented by slender black lines. The rear adopts BMW's latest L-shaped taillight design, while the sides are characterized by sculpted character lines that emphasize the coupé's dynamic form.
The interior offers ambient lighting with six color choices, an optional 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, and a 10.25-inch control display, creating a sophisticated urban ambiance. The four-door configuration and front-wheel-drive layout provide 33mm more rear legroom compared to the similarly sized 2 Series Coupé, and the luggage capacity is increased by 40 liters to a maximum of 430 liters.
Driver assistance features include Driving Assistant, which comprises Lane Change Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Crossing Traffic Warning (rear), Active PDC, and Speed Limit Info display. Additionally, all models come standard with Parking Assistant, featuring Reversing Assistant that can retrace the vehicle's path for the last 50 meters in reverse.
Opting for the Navigation Package equips the vehicle with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, allowing for voice control of vehicle functions and access to information.
The suspension system incorporates ARB (near-actuator wheel slip limitation), which suppresses understeer—the tendency for a front-wheel-drive car to push wide in corners—ensuring the car responds faithfully to the driver's intended line.
Two powertrain options are available. The 218i Gran Coupé is equipped with a 1.5-liter inline 3-cylinder gasoline engine, producing a maximum output of 140 hp (103 kW) at 4,600–6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 220 Nm at 1,480–4,200 rpm.
The high-performance M235i xDrive Gran Coupé features a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine, delivering a maximum output of 306 hp (225 kW) at 5,000–6,250 rpm and a peak torque of 450 Nm at 1,750–4,500 rpm.
The M235i model utilizes BMW's intelligent all-wheel-drive system, xDrive, for its drivetrain. It also comes standard with a newly developed mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential, contributing to its claimed sporty and agile performance.
Visually, it boasts an aggressive stance with a mesh kidney grille and distinctive trapezoidal dual exhaust tailpipes. Furthermore, it comes standard with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, enhancing its functionality.
Pricing starts at ¥3,690,000 to ¥4,480,000 for the 218i Gran Coupé, and ¥6,650,000 for the M235i xDrive Gran Coupé.
