This year, the Crown undergoes a full model change, resulting in a total of four models. While the Crossover and the SUV-style 'Sport' have already been unveiled, the sedan model, arguably the most traditional, has now been announced.
“We didn’t want to create an orthodox sedan”—This was the sentiment of the designers who created the new Crown Sedan. With this in mind, they embraced the concept of a 'New Formal Sedan' that caters to both personal and business needs, utilizing the FR platform to achieve a flowing, horizontal proportion.
This horizontal emphasis not only enhances the design but also contributes to the rear passenger space, meeting chauffeur-driven needs. The extended wheelbase of three meters creates ample room in the rear and facilitates superior ingress and egress.
The front face combines the sharp and wide-emphasizing 'Hammerhead' design with a large, trapezoidal grille featuring a vertical pattern, underscoring its presence as Toyota's flagship model. The rear is adorned with a single, wide horizontal taillight.
The interior features an 'Island Architecture' concept, where various functions like the display and shifter are grouped together as if on an island, creating a calm yet expansive space.
LED lighting, capable of changing to any of 64 colors, is positioned on the instrument panel and around the front footwells, providing indirect lighting with a soft glow reminiscent of traditional Japanese lanterns, adding depth and comfort to the cabin.
Furthermore, the spacious rear seats are equipped with relaxation functions and electric sunshades to meet chauffeur needs. Ride comfort is enhanced through optimized suspension settings and AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension System) for damping force control, resulting in a chassis that effectively isolates passengers from road imperfections.
Two powertrain options are available: an environmentally conscious Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) running on hydrogen, and a hybrid model. Both are rear-wheel drive (FR).
The FCEV utilizes the same high-performance fuel cell system as the 'MIRAI'. Equipped with three high-pressure hydrogen tanks and a fuel cell stack, it can travel approximately 820 km on a single charge, taking about 3 minutes to refuel with hydrogen. Its motor-driven acceleration also offers an enjoyable driving experience.
The hybrid model features Toyota's first application of a newly developed 2.5-liter Multi-Stage Hybrid System. In addition to the engine and two motors, it incorporates a stepped gear, enabling responsive acceleration across all speed ranges, according to the company.
While previously the engine could only be utilized at speeds above 140 km/h, this new system allows it to engage from approximately 43 km/h. Furthermore, despite a smaller displacement, it achieves both dynamic performance and fuel efficiency by maintaining low engine speeds during high-speed driving for a quiet ride.
Both models are equipped with a power supply system. The FCEV can supply high-output electricity to homes and appliances via an external power feeder. Both FCEV and hybrid models feature AC100V, 1,500W accessory outlets in two locations inside the cabin, allowing for power supply not only while driving but also when the vehicle is stationary, serving as an emergency power source.
Pricing is set at 8.3 million yen for the FCEV and 7.3 million yen for the hybrid model.
