McLaren Unveils the Artura, a Production Supercar Featuring a Hybrid System
On February 27, British marque McLaren unveiled the Artura, its first series-production High-Performance Hybrid (HPH) supercar, via an online presentation.
A Hybrid System Combining a 3-Liter V6 Engine and E-Motor
The new Artura's powertrain comprises a new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine, an E-motor, and a high-energy-density battery pack, producing a combined maximum output of 680ps and peak torque of 720Nm. The new V6 engine alone delivers 585ps, approaching 200ps per liter, with 585Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the E-motor instantly generates 95ps and 225Nm of torque.
Performance figures include blistering acceleration of 0-100km/h in 3.0 seconds and 0-200km/h in 8.3 seconds, along with McLaren's sharpest throttle response ever in a supercar. Top speed is capped at 330km/h. The power-to-weight ratio is a class-leading 488ps/t (calculated with the lightest dry weight of 1,395kg). Vehicle weight (DIN) is a class-leading 1,498kg*.
It features full Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) capability, allowing for an 80% charge in just two and a half hours using a standard EVSE cable. The system also enables charging the battery from the internal combustion engine while driving, depending on the selected drive mode. Four drive modes are available: E-mode for electric-only driving, Comfort for mixed driving conditions, and Sport and Track modes, which utilize electric power more aggressively for enhanced low-speed response and acceleration.
Fuel efficiency is a record-breaking 50+ mpg (miles per gallon) for McLaren, with CO2 emissions of 129g/km (EU WLTP combined cycle). The battery has a total capacity of 7.4kWh and offers an electric-only range of 30km. It comes with a 5-year vehicle warranty, a 6-year battery warranty, and a 10-year body warranty.
The transmission is a new, lightweight 8-speed unit, featuring McLaren's first electronic differential. Combined with a new suspension concept, revised electro-hydraulic steering, and Proactive Damping Control, agility, stability, and dynamic performance are enhanced. The tires are next-generation Pirelli P ZERO™ CORSA, equipped with innovative Pirelli Cyber Tyre® technology, delivering grip levels comparable to the P ZERO™ Trofeo R tires found on the McLaren 600LT.
Employs the MCLA Platform, Exclusive to Hybrids
The Artura is the first model to utilize the new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), optimized specifically for the High-Performance Hybrid (HPH) powertrain. It is manufactured at McLaren's Composite Technology Centre (MCTC) in Sheffield. The body incorporates carbon fiber and superformed aluminum.
The exterior boasts perfect supercar proportions, with a pure, functional aesthetic born from the design philosophy of "form follows function," presenting a "shrink-wrapped" appearance. McLaren's signature dihedral doors open closer to the body, and the mirrors fold more tightly, creating a dramatic visual effect.
The cockpit is entirely new, allowing drivers to operate key controls without removing their hands from the steering wheel. The instrument binnacle is mounted to the steering column and adjusts with the wheel. A new infotainment system with an 8-inch HD touchscreen enables advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and smartphone mirroring. The groundbreaking electrical architecture also supports Over-The-Air (OTA) updates and vehicle tracking (in select markets).
Orders are now open (in select regions), with deliveries commencing in the third quarter of this year. In addition to the "Standard" specification, customers can choose from four distinct trims: "Performance," characterized by sporty and functional aesthetics; "TechLux," focusing on technical and luxurious elements; and "Vision," offering a more avant-garde and bold look. Pricing in the UK starts at £185,500.
