Mulliner Unveils the Bacalar, a New Two-Seater Limited to 12 Units Worldwide.
Bentley has unveiled the Bacalar, a new two-door model limited to just 12 units. This bespoke car is handcrafted by Mulliner, Bentley's bespoke division.
Mulliner Handcrafts Each Car to the Owner's Preferences
The Bacalar was originally slated for its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2020. However, due to the escalating impact of the novel coronavirus, the motor show was cancelled, leading to its premiere from Bentley's headquarters in Crewe, UK.
The Bacalar is a two-door grand tourer, named after the beautiful Lake Bacalar in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. It is designed with a focus on the driver and features an open-top barchetta design.
Mulliner, with roots in workshops crafting luxurious carriages in the 16th century and boasting the world's oldest history as a prestigious coachbuilder, will operate under a three-division structure—'Classic,' 'Collection,' and 'Coachbuild'—with the creation of the Bacalar marking this transition.
The Bacalar's design inherits its DNA from the 'EXP 100GT' concept car, unveiled in the summer of 2019 to commemorate Bentley's 100th anniversary, while also incorporating sustainable materials. The metallic finish utilizes rice husk ash, the dashboard is made from 'Riverwood'—ancient fallen trees over 5,000 years old—and British wool is also used.
The powertrain is an enhanced version of the 6.0-liter W12 TSI engine, producing a maximum output of 659 ps and peak torque of 900 Nm, paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. The AWD system adjusts torque distribution between the front and rear wheels according to driving conditions, aiming to operate in rear-wheel-drive mode as much as possible.
Unique design details and elements are also found within the cabin. A semi-enclosed luggage space is provided behind the seats, and the accompanying luggage is also custom-made by Mulliner. The car features a newly designed steering wheel in a 'D' shape, and a rotating display is installed in the center of the console.
All 12 units have already been allocated and are being handcrafted on a full custom order basis at Bentley's carbon-neutral factory in Crewe, UK.
