Corvette Introduces First-Ever Hardtop Convertible Model
General Motors Japan announced the pricing for the new Chevrolet Corvette, along with the introduction of the model's first-ever hardtop convertible variant.
Pricing: Coupe ¥11.8 million – Convertible ¥15.5 million
The eighth-generation Corvette, unveiled in the U.S. in July 2019 and making its Asian premiere at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2020, garnered significant attention for its groundbreaking mid-ship layout and right-hand drive configuration.
Announced alongside the pricing is the introduction of a convertible model featuring Corvette's first-ever retractable hardtop. Compared to traditional soft tops, this new design promises a quieter cabin, enhanced security, and a cleaner aesthetic due to its seamless stowage.
The top can be opened or closed in just 16 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 48 km/h. The trunk space remains practical, accommodating two golf bags even with the top stowed, and combined with the front storage, it offers utility comparable to the coupe, according to the manufacturer.
Models for the Japanese market come standard with the "Cloud Streaming Navigation," a fully connected in-car navigation system co-developed by GM Japan and Zenrin DataCom. This system enables autonomous navigation even in environments where GPS signals are unavailable, such as tunnels, and continuously streams the latest map data.
Both models are powered by a 6.2-liter V8 naturally aspirated engine, producing a maximum output of 369 kW (495 hp) and peak torque of 637 Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The lineup includes the "2LT" coupe at ¥11.8 million, the "3LT" with enhanced interior and exterior features at ¥14 million, and the convertible at ¥15.5 million. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in May 2021.
