Toyota Unveils the "bZ4X" Concept, the First in its New EV Series Co-Developed with Subaru
On April 19, at the Shanghai Motor Show held in Shanghai, China, Toyota announced plans to expand its lineup to approximately 70 electrified vehicles by 2025, including 15 EVs and seven models in its new "Toyota bZ" EV series. The concept vehicle for the first model in this series, the "Toyota bZ4X," made its world debut.
Global Sales to Begin by Mid-2022
The Toyota bZ4X is the first EV in the Toyota bZ series and is an SUV type developed jointly with Subaru, one of Toyota's partners. It utilizes the e-TNGA dedicated EV platform co-developed by both companies. By combining Toyota's expertise in electrification with Subaru's advanced AWD technology, the bZ4X aims to deliver an EV that offers both comfort and driving enjoyment.
Key features include a distinctive styling achieved through short overhangs and a long wheelbase, thanks to the dedicated EV platform, which also provides a cabin space comparable to a D-segment sedan.
The interior features a yoke-style steering wheel, eliminating the need to shift grip during maneuvers and contributing to a spacious feel. It also incorporates steer-by-wire technology for smooth, intuitive driving control. Combined with a low instrument panel and a meter positioned above the steering wheel, these elements enhance the sense of openness and visibility, enabling safer and more secure driving.
Furthermore, the adoption of a new AWD system co-developed with Subaru ensures safe and enjoyable driving with quick EV-like responses, along with high off-road capability. It also utilizes regenerative energy and a solar charging system for efficient charging even while stationary. Toyota claims this ensures a driving range that does not inconvenience users, even in conditions like winter.
The Toyota bZ4X will be produced in Japan and China, with global sales planned to commence by mid-2022.
