System Total Output of 653 hp and 800 Nm

The BMW XM, like other X models, is a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) as BMW calls it, with enhanced on-road performance. It has been introduced as an M-exclusive model capable of serious track driving.
BMW states that this model follows in the lineage of the mid-ship supercar "M1," which debuted in 1978 as the first car from BMW Motorsport GmbH (now BMW M GmbH), and is an M-exclusive model.
Incidentally, M models developed by BMW M GmbH are categorized into two types: M High-Performance Models, designed for track driving, and M Performance Models, which incorporate technologies honed on the track to enhance driving performance. The XM, which debuted this time, falls into the former category.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain, the first in a BMW M model, combines a 4.4-liter V8 BMW TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine producing a maximum output of 489 hp (360 kW) at 5,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm at 1,600–5,000 rpm, with an electric motor delivering 197 hp (145 kW) powered by a 29.5 kWh battery.
An 8-speed M Steptronic transmission is used. The system boasts a total maximum output of 653 hp (480 kW) and a maximum torque of 800 Nm, making it one of the models with the most powerful powertrains in BMW history, excluding BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles). It can also be driven solely on electric power, with an estimated range of approximately 90 km on a full charge.
The chassis features Adaptive M Suspension Professional with electronically controlled dampers and active roll stabilization. Three modes can be selected from the M Setup menu: Comfort mode for excellent comfort on long journeys, Sport mode to enhance body rigidity for sporty driving, and Sport Plus mode for dynamic driving.
Furthermore, it achieves superior driving dynamics befitting an M model in all situations through the adoption of active roll comfort for improved straight-line stability, integral active steering—a first for M models—which enables agile handling and quick lane changes, M Sport brakes, and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system specifically for M models, ensuring excellent traction.
The exterior design emphasizes the sportiness unique to M models. The headlights feature the split, twin-circular & double-light design seen in BMW's luxury models, with LED daytime running lights including turn indicators in the upper section and LED headlights with adaptive matrix function and cornering light capabilities in the lower section.
The iconic BMW kidney grille is boldly positioned between the headlights, tapering towards the outer edges and emphasizing a dynamic character with its octagonal outline, evolving into a design that asserts presence and power.
Looking at the side of the body, the long wheelbase of 3,105 mm and the standard 23-inch wheels front and rear accentuate its powerful silhouette.
The rear features distinctive L-shaped LED combination lights that extend horizontally. The vertically arranged hexagonal M dual exhaust tailpipes, housed within the rear bumper, not only produce an emotional M sound but also impart a visually futuristic impression.
Inside, the latest curved display, integrating a 12.3-inch instrument panel and a 14.9-inch control display, is curved towards the driver for excellent visibility and operability. The rear seats, combining leather and Alcantara with large cushions, offer rear passengers a lounge-sofa-like experience, enveloping them.
In terms of driver assistance systems, Japan features the "Traffic Jam Assistant with Hands-Off Function," for which BMW was the first to receive approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, allowing for hands-free driving under certain conditions, along with other cutting-edge systems.
It also boasts the latest generation of connectivity, allowing voice commands such as "OK, BMW" to control vehicle functions and set destinations.
The price is 21.3 million yen, with deliveries scheduled to begin in April.
