Refreshed Compact BEV SUV EQB
Mercedes-Benz Japan has announced a minor change to the compact electric vehicle (BEV) SUV, the EQB, and simultaneously opened reservations.
Increased Range with Updated High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Battery
The EQB, which premiered globally in 2021, has been refined.
The body dimensions are 4,685 mm in length, 1,835 mm in width, and 1,705 mm in height. While sized for easy maneuverability in Japan's road conditions, it features a long wheelbase of 2,830 mm, allowing for up to seven occupants or ample cargo space, balancing everyday usability with its design.
There are two powertrain options. The "EQB 250+" is equipped with an AC synchronous electric motor on the front axle, producing a maximum output of 140 kW (190 hp) and a maximum torque of 385 Nm, driving the front wheels.
Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive "EQB 350 4MATIC" features an AC induction motor on the front axle and an AC synchronous motor on the rear axle, delivering a maximum output of 215 kW (292 hp) and a maximum torque of 520 Nm.
By using the rear electric motor as the primary drive and the front electric motor as support during high loads, energy consumption is optimized while minimizing drag losses in the partial load range of the front axle induction motor.
The battery has been updated to a high-voltage lithium-ion cell. The "EQB 250+" is equipped with a 70.5 kWh battery, offering a WLTC range of 557 km, an increase from the previous model. Charging supports AC trickle charging up to 6.0 kW and DC rapid charging up to 100 kW (CHAdeMO standard).
The exterior maintains its silhouette while adopting Mercedes-Benz's latest design language for EVs. It features a striking front face with a three-dimensional star pattern and a newly designed front bumper.
Inside, a new generation of steering wheels allows for intuitive operation of navigation and driving assistance packages.
Additionally, the "Star Pattern Interior Trim" with backlighting, which illuminates the passenger-side interior trim with countless three-pointed stars during night driving, contributes to a clean interior aesthetic.
Safety equipment has been updated from the conventional "Radar Safety Package" to the new generation "Driving Assistance Package," conforming to the international standard "UN-ECE R152."
This includes features such as "Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC," which adjusts the distance to the vehicle ahead and automatically resumes driving when the vehicle ahead starts moving in traffic jams, and "Active Brake Assist," which warns the driver with visual and audible alerts if a collision is imminent.
New body colors, including High-tech Silver and Spectral Blue, have been added.
The price for the front-wheel-drive "EQB 250+" is 8.11 million yen, and deliveries have already begun. The all-wheel-drive "EQB 350 4MATIC" is priced at 8.99 million yen. The "EQB 350 4MATIC" is currently undergoing type certification application with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, so this is a projected price, with deliveries scheduled to begin around late July 2024.
