New Chassis and Engine, Capable of EV-Only Driving
The new model, which McLaren describes as a "High Performance Hybrid (HPH)" supercar, has entered the final stage of its development and testing program, including public road testing. It will be positioned between the "GT" and "720S" in McLaren's lineup.
The new model marks the first use of a new carbon fiber chassis, named the "McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA)," designed to optimize the high-performance hybrid powertrain and the latest generation of driver support technologies.
Designed, engineered, and produced at the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in Sheffield, UK, built for £50 million (approximately 7 billion yen), it will serve as the basis for McLaren's next generation of hybrid supercars to be introduced to the market.
The powertrain features a new V6 engine. It is said to offer sufficient range for urban travel solely on electric power.
Concurrently, it was announced that with the arrival of this new model, the "Sports Series" name, introduced in 2015 with the "570S," will be phased out at the end of 2020, with the GT4-inspired "620R" being the final model.
We eagerly await further details on the specifications and styling of this "High Performance Hybrid" supercar.
