BMW M GmbH develops high-performance M models. These are divided into two categories: "M High-Performance Models," designed for circuit driving, and "M Performance Models," which incorporate technology cultivated on the track to enhance driving performance. The M3 and M4 introduced here fall into the former category.
The design of both models features a large kidney grille with horizontal double bars, creating a powerful front-end aesthetic. Large air intakes, designed to enhance engine cooling for the high output, further differentiate them from other models.
The side design includes M-specific side gills and door mirrors as standard. The rear also emphasizes their high-performance nature with M sport exhausts and diffusers for improved aerodynamics.
The interior also exudes a sporty atmosphere with M-specific instrument panels and steering wheels. It is also equipped with the "Intelligent Personal Assistant," which uses AI technology to enable voice control of vehicle functions and access to information.
The M4 is powered by an inline 6-cylinder gasoline turbo engine producing a maximum output of 353 kW (480 ps) and a maximum torque of 550 Nm.

The M3 Competition and M4 Competition, boasting even higher performance, are equipped with an uprated engine producing a maximum output of 375 kW (510 ps) and a maximum torque of 650 Nm. The transmission is an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic, with rear-wheel drive. The M4 is also available with a manual transmission.
Various parts, including the body and drivetrain components, utilize aluminum extensively to contribute to weight reduction. The standard M adaptive suspension enhances not only sporty driving but also ride comfort in urban environments.
For demanding circuit driving, large-diameter brake discs with excellent heat and fade resistance, along with lightweight 6-piston M compound brakes, are standard. M carbon ceramic brakes are also available as an option.
While capable of circuit driving, the models are also equipped with comprehensive safety and driver assistance systems. These include the "Traffic Jam Assistant with Hands-Off Function," active cruise control using a tri-camera and radar system, collision avoidance and mitigation braking, and pedal misapplication acceleration control, all as standard.
Pricing is as follows: M3 Competition at 13.24 million yen. The M4 is 12.98 million yen, and the M4 Competition is 13.48 million yen. The Track Package, which can be added to the Competition models, is an additional 1.12 million yen for all models. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in March 2021.
